Helping Hand Volunteer

Age Requirements: From 18 years old plus

Role Summary: To volunteer as part of our multidisciplinary team to support effective clinical care by helping enhance, patients’ nutritional needs through the provision of daily snacks & drinks mid morning and mid afternoon

Key Responsibilities

  • Support patients with their fluid intake by offering hot/cold drinks
  • Refresh patients water jugs
  • Record on patients charts if any drinks taken or declined
  • Refresh patients water jugs  
  • Support patients to keep in touch with their relatives/ friends using email, mobile phone or text if unable to independently
  • Assist patients to write letters to loved ones or read letters received to patients
  • Be a listening ear/ sitting, talking or listening patients may want to tell you their story
  • Assist the patient to reminisce about past life events
  • Read the news/ pages of a book
  • Support patients with hobbies that they wish to pursue e.g. artwork, jigsaws, puzzles.

Training requirements:

As a Helping Hand Volunteer you will complete the following training:

  • Teesside Hospice mandatory training
  • Volunteer induction training
  • Any other training identified as appropriate to the role

Support and supervision:

Your first line of support and for any enquiries will be Line Manager to support you in your role and the senior nurse on duty.

Communications:

The line manager will regularly provide you with any information updates, training opportunities and upcoming events appropriate to your role.

You will be provided with a Teesside Hospice volunteer badge.
