A helping hand

“My name is James Yates and I began volunteering at Teesside Hospice in 2015 as a Volunteer Events Assistant. After personally coming into contact with the hospice a few years ago, I felt passionate about giving something back to the charity that had helped my family so much.

When the opportunity came up to help with the Teesside Hospice Starlight Stroll, I jumped at the chance of getting involved. My role was to marshal the route and ensure that all of the supporters taking part did so safely. I also assisted with the clean up on the night. Since the stroll, I’ve volunteered at the hospice’s Colour Run and Sunflower Memory Garden, as well as some other smaller events, such as charity nights.

I really enjoy the variety of volunteering at Teesside Hospice. There’s also a good team spirit amongst the Fundraisers and other volunteers. Whilst volunteering doesn't bring a visible reward, it feels good to give something back and help others in need.”
