Teesside Hospice make young woman’s dream come true

The staff at Teesside Hospice are there for their patients every step of the way and are committed to ensuring patients receive the best possible care, so when Danielle told staff about her bucket list they did all they could to make her dreams come true…

Danielle, 28, from Middlesbrough was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2017, she underwent treatment but further tests in 2018 showed that the cancer had moved into her liver and her bones.

Danielle was referred to Teesside Hospice for symptom management and pain control, however Danielle was recently given the devastating news that her condition has worsened and she doesn’t have long left to live.

Despite such devastating news, Danielle felt she should be pro-active and created a bucket list, with the help of her best friend Andrea, filled with everything she would love to do in her last weeks.

A self-confessed animal lover, Danielle’s biggest goal was to hold a real life monkey. Andrea, Danielle’s best friend said: ‘Danielle loves animals, even spiders! She has a horse and three dogs but has always wanted to have a monkey. When we told the nurses about Danielle's goal they strived to make it happen."

Thanks to the staff at Teesside Hospice and a social media appeal Danielle's dream to hold a monkey came true on Tuesday. Dexter, a Marmoset monkey from Wild Animal Adventures at Portrack Lane, Stockton, was brought to the hospice where Danielle was able to hold and cuddle him.

Kelly, Manager at Wild Animal Adventures said: “We were so pleased to be able to bring Dexter to Teesside Hospice to meet Danielle. It’s been so lovely to see the local community coming together to help make her dreams come true and I’m really proud that we could help in this way.”

Tina, Danielle’s Mum, said: “Danielle has always talked about monkeys so when we told her a monkey was coming to the hospice she was ecstatic and absolutely over the moon. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped Danielle to tick this off her bucket list.”

Andrea, Danielle's best friend added: "We can't thank the staff at Teesside Hospice enough, we couldn't wish for anything more from them. Not only have they provided the best care to Danielle and helped make her dreams come true, they have looked after her friends and family too. We are all so grateful to be able to have these amazing memories, thanks to the hospice."
